What's so nefarious about gay marriage?
In his April 7 letter, Jim Finnegan writes about the gay agenda, due to the consideration of a civil unions bill in Illinois that would provide civil unions with the benefits and responsibilities of marriage for same-sex couples. This is something that Illinoisans in polls overwhelmingly support, but Mr. Finnegan believes this to be part of some radical agenda. The truth is, there is a gay agenda and it is quite simple: equality. Gay men and lesbians are asking for equality and nothing more. I do not understand how being able to marry the person you love is a special right or the ability to work at a job you are qualified for without being fired for who you are or being able to serve in the military for your country is something that is a right above and beyond the rest of us; it is what heterosexual Americans take for granted every day. There is no nefarious agenda sought by gays and lesbians in Illinois, it is simply the ability to live their lives without harassment and discrimination. I don't see what is so special about that. I urge you to call your state senators and representatives and ask them to support the Illinois Civil Unions Law.
