Schaumburg bank robbery, motorcycle chase unrelated
Law enforcement authorities say the man who robbed a Schaumburg bank Tuesday and the man who led police officers on a long-distance chase on his motorcycle are likely two different people with no connection.
At about noon Tuesday, a lone man robbed the Bank of America branch at 1805 E. Golf Road. He presented a note to a teller and fled on foot with an unspecified amount of cash, FBI Agent Virginia Wright said.
The man was described as a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 pounds, wearing khaki slacks and a white shirt.
Though he left on foot, there are unconfirmed reports from witnesses that he subsequently got into a car that left the scene, Wright said.
She added that there are no indications that robbery was related to the subsequent chase that took place of a motorcycle rider.
But Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said a man appearing to match the description of the bank robber attracted the attention of security officers at Woodfield Mall.
That man left the mall on a motorcycle but was kept in sight by Woodfield security while Schaumburg police were called, Nebl said.
The motorcyclist sped away and began to flee pursuing officers after an attempt was made to pull him over for the bank robbery investigation, Nebl said.
Later Tuesday, there were various reported sightings of the motorcyclist - at least some of them false - in DuPage County, many on or near I-355.
The motorcycle was registered to a 24-year-old Western Springs man and was eventually spotted in that suburb about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Western Springs Deputy Police Chief Brian Budds said.
The motorcyclist was not taken into custody Tuesday but was in contact with Schaumburg police on Wednesday, Nebl said.
Police have not yet filed any charges against the man in connection to Tuesday's events, he added.
Budds said the Western Springs suspect has several existing traffic violations listed against the motorcyclist from various jurisdictions.
