St. Charles Public Library board president honored

St. Charles Public Library Board President Norm Huntley has seen the library and its services grow and grow. In fact, he has been on the board for the past 40 years to guide the library in its development from a small library lending 138,000 books to 20,350 residents to a multifaceted information center serving 55,000 people, with an annual circulation of 1,500,000 items and 2,500,000 hits on its web site.

As board president since 1973, he has overseen the expansion of the library facility from 19,000 to 54,000 square feet, and led the board and staff in developing plans and acquiring land for a facility that will serve the community to the year 2030.

To express their appreciation of his dedication to improving and maintaining the quality of the library, the library board honored Huntley at their April 8 meeting by naming the main library meeting room the "Norman C. Huntley Meeting Room." He won his first library election on April 15, 1969, was just re-elected to a six-year term on April 7.

Join the library board and staff to honor Huntley at an open house from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19 during National Library Week. The library is at 1 S. Sixth Ave.
