Stream clean up
The public is invited to join volunteer canoeists and kayakers from the Lake County Forest Preserve District at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 4, for a shoreline clean up of Sterling Lake at Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve. Van Patten Woods is on Route 173 east of Route 41. Volunteers will meet at the boat launch area on Sterling Lake. Volunteers can bring a canoe or kayak, but also should bring work gloves. Habitat for Humanity looking for buyers:
Three informational meetings are scheduled for families interested in applying to buy a Habitat for Humanity house. The meetings will be in the Waukegan Public Library on April 18, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and April 21, 7 to 9 p.m. Another meeting on April 18, noon to 2 p.m., will be in Spanish. Habitat for Humanity houses are sold for zero profit; potential buyers must currently live in substandard or overcrowded housing; and have an annual income of $26,400 to $40,000. Buyers must also spend 500 hours working on the construction of their house and must be legal residents of Lake County.
Group wants members:
As it celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the Mundelein Lions Club is seeking new members. The volunteer group, which helps the hearing and sight impaired, also works with schools on various community projects. If you're interested in joining the club, call Paul Papineau at (847) 949-4592.
New lease in works:
Libertyville and Cook Memorial Public Library District officials later this month are expected to separately vote on a lease that will allow the library in that village to remain in Cook Park, library board President Aaron Lawlor said Thursday. Last month, representatives of both agencies confirmed the library's lease expired in 1984. A proposed lease calls for the library to pay $10 a year in rent for the site. The village board could vote on the plan April 14, with the library board expected to vote April 21, Lawlor said.
Lindenhurst water main flush
The village of Lindenhurst will conducting its semiannual water main flushing program starting April 6. The process will happen daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents are urged to refrain from doing laundry during this time to avoid staining of clothing, which might happen due to the disturbance in the water main. Signs will be posted in your area before flushing begins. For details call (847) 356-8252.
