Geneva Film Festival an international draw
Lights, camera, action: See an assortment of independent short films, documentaries and full-length features on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the second annual Geneva Film Festival. Activities include morning workshops, film screenings running all afternoon at five downtown Geneva venues and an evening awards reception.
The 10 workshops will be held from 8 to 11:45 a.m. It will led by 10 experts in the film industry. Workshop presenters include Emmy Award-winning producers, Hollywood writers, makeup artists and professors from local colleges and universities.
These workshops are not just for aspiring filmmakers, but for anyone who enjoys movies, said Cheryl Klein, event organizer.
"The technical aspect of movie making is fascinating work," Klein said. "The workshops allow you to go behind the scenes with industry professionals and learn about the art of movie making."
Film screenings begin at 11 a.m. at the Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St.; Geneva Public Library, 127 James St.; Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St.; Old Towne Pub, 201 W. State St. and One Fine Art, 121 S. Third St.
You will see some well-known actors in these independent productions, said Vic Portincaso, event organizer and Geneva Cultural Arts commissioner. "We have Academy award-winner Faye Dunaway in one and Ben Vereen and Tim Kazurinski in another," he noted. "Both of these films were made in 2008."
This year's festival has become an international event, Portincaso added, with entries from around the world. Films were judged by panel of entertainment professionals, and only the top films have made it to the screenings. With the $10 admission fee, viewers can choose from a variety of films and venues, all of which are within walking distance.
The festival will offer a "People's Choice Award" where audience members choose their favorite film. Last year, Jose Gomez of Geneva won the People's Choice Award for his short film, "The Pizza Delivery Man." This year, his short film, "Muchachos Frescos" will be featured.
Festivalgoers also are invited to attend a free awards ceremony and meet the filmmakers at 6 p.m. at 514 W. State St. Winners will be announced. Appetizers will be provided by Le Berry Bistro, and desserts provided by Inglenook Pantry. For a schedule of workshops and film screenings, visit www.genevafilmfestival.org.
