Prepare to be impressed on St. James housewalk

An original 1938 Sherwood neighborhood colonial is one of five on the St. James Church annual Jubilation Housewalk Friday, Sept. 18.

The owners preserved the historic feel of the house while adding space with modern amenities. Visitors will see arched entryways, the original staircase, woodwork and "wavy" glass windows in the old part of the house.

But oh, the addition. The new kitchen has a blue Aga stove, the type every serious cook in England has. The family room with the two-story barrel ceiling features a wall of French doors.

This family took advantage of its half-acre lot with four terraces, including two on the second floor, which features a new master suite.

The mud room has a dog shower, but the homeowner can also use it for a floral design business. And the couple made sure the addition fits the house with matching woodwork, glass door knobs and vintage light fixtures.

Other homes on tour include one first built in the 1870s that enjoys several additions; a universally accessible home that sits by a pool; an Italian Villa penthouse; and a new home the owner designed on a mature lot.

The walk is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

Tickets purchased by today, Sept. 16, are $30. After that they are $35.
