Baking competition sweetens up community event

Area residents are invited to sweeten up their community by bringing what they bake best for Saturday's Blue Ribbon Baking Competition.

The competition, hosted by the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club, became part of the Naper Days tradition in 2005 when club member Judy Teichen suggested it as a way to increase community involvement in the festival.

"It started to catch on and became something that people looked forward to," said Sue Maloney, publicity chairwoman for the club.

Bakers can enter baked goods in more than one of the categories that include bars, cakes/cookies, pies, and quick breads. The entries also are separated into adult, children and professional categories.

Anyone is welcome to enter the competition, which will be held at noon Sunday, June 21, in the Meeting House at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville. Interested participants must register online by Saturday. There is no entry fee.
