Soapbox: Keep Martin Luther King Day intact

Kenneth Arnold, a candidate in the 8th Congressional District Republican primary, pitched an interesting idea this week. If elected, Arnold said he'd push to rename Martin Luther King Day to "American Martyrs Day." The aim would be to celebrate notable American civilians -- regardless of race, creed, or color -- who suffered hardship or death to promote higher ideals. In addition to King, he suggested Robert F. Kennedy, Rosa Parks and Sitting Bull would be worthy of such recognition. Arnold said it was about "inclusiveness" and would reflect King's ideals. After giving it some thought, we've come to the conclusion it's a noble idea, but one we can't support. The truth is King was a huge, central figure in modern America for leading a cause and struggle so great, it changed the course of history for an entire group of people and the nation as a whole. And, it cost him his life. For that, you get your own day.

Transit help for Lake County

The transit bailout package approved by state lawmakers is great news for anyone who drives in Lake County. Officials think they'll be able to count on $28 million a year from the state to use for road projects. That more than doubles the amount currently set aside each year. How'd officials swing this? With state expenditures for road projects a perennial wild card, Lake County leaders decided that a unified front would be the best way to get to the head of the line for whatever became available. In two transportation summits, Lake County's delegation of state representatives and senators stood together to back a priority list of projects. Now that the money is on the way, officials need to create an action plan. That shouldn't be a problem, since the county already has one, of sorts. Officials prioritize road projects in a 5-year plan that is updated every year. Traffic congestion and road improvements are important issues for residents, and local, county and state officials are often criticized for not doing enough. Now, it's time to give them a pat on the back.

New summer school

No one likes summer school. Most teens would rather be playing sports, working or sitting in front of the TV than stuck in a classroom during summer vacation. But a newly announced summer program in Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 has merit. Set to launch this June, the Incoming Freshman Academy aims to help incoming freshmen who need help preparing for high school. It will focus on improving the students' reading, English and math skills, all of which are essential to the high school experience. About 80 students are expected to attend the free, seven-week program. We hope they're successful.

Breath of fresh air

It's almost a month into the new state indoor smoking ban that extinguished the lighting up of cigarettes in restaurants and bars. And you can't help but notice the difference. The air is fresh -- and safe -- in the absence of tobacco fumes. Of course, smokers are angry about this. And having to go outside in sub-zero temperatures to take up their habit isn't making them any happier. But avoiding frostbite is just one more good reason to quit.

Getting the message?

Chicago Blackhawks coach Dennis Savard ripped into his team for lack of effort after Thursday's game. Chicago Bulls coach Jim Boylan has also had occasion to criticize his team's play. When we get chewed out by our bosses, we sure respond by doing a better job. You would hope the Bulls and Blackhawks similarly respond to tongue-lashings from their bosses.
