Heartland's anniversary concert to premiere Elgin composer's work
An approaching concert by Elgin's Heartland Voices choir will serve to celebrate the group's 10th anniversary, and the world premiere of an Elgin composer's work.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, the choir will perform at First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave., Elgin.
The first half of the concert, will feature John Rutter's "Mass of the Children" performed together by the Heartland Voices Choir and the Elgin Children's Chamber Chorus.
The second half of the concert unveils composer Daniel Brewbaker's latest work, "Yestoday."
Inspired by the poetry of e.e. cummings, Brewbaker said in a news release that the writings "effectively, simply and elegantly exemplifies those qualities of aliveness, honesty, emotional and intellectual integrity that I most seek and seek most to impart, through art."
Heartland Voices founder, artistic director and conductor John Slawson called the work "a tribute to the human spirit."
Heartland Voices, according to organizer and office manager Sue Buerger, was founded in 1999. It has been regularly featured as a guest artist for the Illinois Chamber Symphony and the DuPage Opera Theatre.
About 40 singers will perform in the Elgin concert, Buerger said. They have been rehearsing for this performance for the past three months.
The nonprofit choir, who believes in educating the next generation about choral music, regularly features area youth choirs at its seasonal concerts. Heartland Voices members hail mainly from the Tri-Cities and Fox Valley.
Heartland Voices will also perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Marcelline Catholic Church, 820 S. Springinsguth Road, Schaumburg, with the St. Marcelline Catholic Church Sanctuary Choir, which has performed across Europe.
