Fantastic finish for Barrington's Fogle

The third time truly was a charm for Barrington's Emily Fogle.

The junior finished second at state in both her freshman and sophomore years in the 100-yard breaststroke.

But on Saturday at the girls swimming state meet finals, Fogle finally claimed the top spot. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.61 at Evanston Township High School.

"It all fell into place and it felt great," said Fogle, who led from start to finish in securing Barrington's first individual swimming title in the Fillies' illustrious team history. "This is what I wanted - this is what I worked for."

Rosary cruised to its third consecutive state title with 184 points, easily outdistancing New Trier and Hinsdale Central, who tied for second with 101 points.

The Beads swept the three relays, including setting a state record in the 200 free relay (1:33.88) for the second consecutive day. Mackenzie Powers took first in the 100 fly (55.51). Waubonsie Valley (85 points) and Downers Grove North (77 points) rounded out the top five. Barrington (60 points) captured seventh place, finishing in the top 10 at state for 13th time.

Senior Tori Alland capped a stellar career for Stevenson by taking fifth place in the 500 free (5:02.29) and ninth place in the 200 free (1:52.89).

"I was really happy with it," said Alland, who set a school record in the prelims for the 500 free (5:00.62). "Yesterday was a little bit better for me, but today I stepped up and did what I could."

Senior Erin Cunningham picked up another medal for the Patriots, taking 12th place in the 200 IM (2:10.22).

"It felt pretty good," said Cunningham. "The freestyle was the toughest part of the race. I was getting tired."

Junior Kerrin Seymour missed on her 11th dive but was able to pull out a sixth-place medal in diving for Stevenson with 382.85 points.

Seymour's knees buckled on a 11/2 summersault with two twists, but the senior cleared her final dive on a front double-pike.

"I'm disappointed," said Seymour who won the state title as a freshman and finished fifth last year. "It hurts, but there is next year. You have on days and off days. Today wasn't my day."

Mundelein's Taylor Reckert picked up her second consecutive medal in diving (369.45) with a seventh-place finish.

The senior used an inward double on her first dive to propel her medal drive.

"I love that dive because inwards are my favorite," said Reckert, who took fifth last year. "Good way to finish."

Dominique Bessette picked up Antioch's first state medal by taking 10th place in the 200 IM (2:08.63).

"Last year I made it to state but I didn't do so well," said Bessette. "This year was a lot better, it helped that I knew what was going on. My goal was to make top 12 and I did it."

Libertyville's Maggie Boling also picked up her first state medal, finishing ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.09).

"I tried my hardest and I'm happy with the results," said Boling of her performance. "About a minute before the race it hit me and I started getting nervous but everything worked out."
