Man in Schaumburg apartment standoff charged

A misdemeanor charge has been filed against a Schaumburg man who barricaded himself in his apartment Thursday.

Edward Gonzalez of the 1900 block of Evening Song Court has been charged with disorderly conduct after a SWAT team was needed when he refused to exit his apartment.

Schaumburg police responded to the location at 2:31 p.m. Thursday after a report of gunshots heard from an apartment.

Officers arrived and established a perimeter around the building. A sergeant made phone contact with Gonzalez inside the apartment and requested he exit the building to speak with officers.

Police said Gonzalez refused, and based on statements he made during the phone call and previous police responses to his residence, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team was requested to respond. Gonzalez surrendered at 6:15 p.m.

Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said investigators were not able to assemble any evidence after the incident to prove that Gonzalez had possession of or ever fired a gun.

"We charged him with the only thing we able to charge him with," Nebl said.

Schaumburg police closed several roads in the area, including a stretch of Golf Road, during the incident.

Gonzalez was taken to the police station, where he posted the $100 cash bond and was released shortly after midnight.

He's scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 22.
