Schaumburg man gets volunteer award

Schaumburg resident Thomas Appiah, was one of 12 recipients to earn the Motorola CEO Award for Volunteerism. Appiah conducts a live, weekly, radio broadcast from his home in Schaumburg to Ghana, encouraging individuals to more responsible. He also started an initiative to clean up his hometown of Cape Coast.

• The Community Bankers Association of Illinois awarded Alexa Bennett of Arlington Heights with its 2008 Shazam Scholarship of $2,000. Bennett, a student at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, was sponsored by The People's Bank of Arlington Heights.

• The following District 54 personnel will receive a Those Who Excel Award from the Illinois State Board of Education: Caron Gibbert, support personnel category; the District 54 school board, team category; Nella Fasano, educational service personnel category; Katie Schneider, classroom teacher category; Nicole Fentem, community volunteer category; and Ric King, school administrator category.

• Dr. Michael G. Durbin of Prospect Heights was elected to the board of trustees of the Illinois State Dental Society. Durbin, an orthodontist in Des Plaines, is past president and director of the Des Plaines Lions Club, board member of the annual Midwest Seminar of Dental Medicine; past Cub master of Pack 347; and past assistant coach of Prospect Heights Youth Baseball.
