Bond set for Streamwood man accused in dog killing
A Cook County judge set bond at $100,000 Monday for a 20-year-old Streamwood man charged with aggravated animal cruelty in the death of his family's pet.
The court also ordered a behavioral clinical exam to evaluate the mental state and determine fitness of the defendant, Michael A. Makowski, of the 2000 block of Quarter Hollow Lane, in Streamwood, said Assistant State's Attorney Adam Klugman.
Police arrested Makowski Saturday. He told authorities he had always hated his family's 20-pound miniature schnauzer, but claimed he did not remember killing the dog. He viewed the pet as a "Lamb of God" and believed that by killing the animal his mother, who does not currently live with the family, would return home "happy and healthy," Klugman said.
Authorities say Makowski carried the dog to his room, slit its throat with a utility knife and then went into his father's room where he took a nap. Makowski's grandmother found the dog and the knife, covered with fur and blood, in the defendant's room.
