McCain summons the worst in us
There is a renewed political pestilence abroad in the land today. It's the return of half century old, now discredited, McCarthyism.
But instead of once invoking the dreaded enemy of the United States, communism, it now conjures up our nebulous adversary, terrorism.
Where Sen. Joseph McCarthy attacked many American citizens for presumed and unproven affiliations with the Communist Party, Sen. John McCain has attacked Barack Obama and his supporters for their erroneously labeled association with American and foreign terrorists.
McCarthy pursued his agenda for political gain and was eventually censured by the Senate.
Apparently McCain is pursuing a similar witch hunt for a similar goal.
In the election, will the American people, not waiting for the Senate, then censure McCain?
How long must we as a nation endure political campaigns that summon not the best but the worst in us?
