Motorola's newest smart phone likely to be called 'Devour'

Motorola Inc.'s newest smart phone will probably be named the "Devour," according to several blogs that follow the mobile phone industry.

The Schaumburg-based company, the largest U.S. maker of mobile phones, is the creator of the Droid smart phone that runs on Google Inc.'s Android operating system. More than 800,000 Droids were sold between their Nov. 6 introduction with Verizon wireless and the end of November.

Motorola did file an application in May to register "Devour" as a trademark for mobile phones, other wireless communication devices, batteries, battery chargers and power adapters, according to the database of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Some photos of a new Motorola device code-named "Calgary" surfaced on the UnwiredView.com Web site in October. The patent office doesn’t have any pending applications for Motorola for the name "Calgary."

The Wi-Fi Alliance gave Motorola an interoperability certificate Dec. 9 for a mobile device believed to be the Devour that operates both using WiFi and cellular technology. The alliance is a standards organization for high-speed local area networking.
