Toddler's legacy turns into annual fundraiser

When little Saret Yann died in 1985, she certainly had no way of knowing her death would spark a legacy of kindness.

Shortly after the 2-year-old Cambodian refugee died from aplastic anemia, Wheaton resident Chana Bernstein founded a charitable organization in her memory -- so no other family would be forced to face economic hardship while a family member battled serious illness.

Today, 22 years later, Saret Charitable Foundation is helping DuPage County residents facing economic hardship with emergency assistance.

In order to continue their work, the Saret Charitable Foundation will host its annual membership gathering, "From India to Cabaret," from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew United Church of Christ, 1420 S. Gables Blvd., Wheaton.

Bidula Sinha, a 16-year-old dancer, will perform Indian dances at 6 p.m., and the Acts of Kindness Cabaret will perform from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The evening also will include a vegetarian buffet dinner.

The cost is $25 in advance, or $30 at the door. For details or reservations, call (630) 842-8876 or visit www.saretcharitablefund.org
