Elgin man guilty of running Super Bowl gambling pools

An Elgin man was convicted of running Super Bowl gambling pools at taverns in Elburn and St. Charles, officials said Wednesday.

Michael A. Alvarez Sr., 53, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Kane County Circuit Court to keeping a gambling place. He could face up to six years in prison at sentencing May 12.

Prosecutors said Alvarez ran gambling pools totaling $60,000 in value from Sept. 1, 2006, to Feb. 28, 2007, at Emma's Pub and Cantina in Elburn and Miguel's on the Fox in St. Charles. Both taverns were owned by Alvarez's wife, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's office.

Judge James C. Hallock is expected to decide at sentencing whether Alvarez is eligible for an extended prison term because of prior state and federal gambling convictions.

Alvarez is free on a $10,000 bond.
