Stem cells offer hope for many
To answer Cal Thomas' question posed in his faith-based opinion "Beware of where stem cell steps will take us" he asks "Does anyone know the destination?"
I do. Stem cell research will bring a cure to the 3 million people who have for Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes, including my 10-year-old son. He will no longer have to test his blood glucose by pricking his finger eight times a day or endure six insulin injections each day for the rest of his life just to stay alive. Nor will he have to worry about the life-threatening complications like kidney failure and blindness. I only speak about diabetes because that is my experience.
But I have to say how smug Thomas is eluding to a "trembling Micheal J. Fox." or Americans in wheelchairs pleading for a chance to walk again. I'm glad doctors found a way for Thomas' wife to be cured through her own stem cells - some people are not that lucky.
I'm grateful President Obama reversed Bush's outdated ideologically based decision and put science and the health of future generations first by signing the Stem Cell Executive Order and the Presidential Memorandum on Scientific Integrity.
