Police: 79-year-old man stabbed blind resident at assisted living facility

A 79-year-old man faces an attempted murder charge after police say he stabbed a blind man at a Park Ridge assisted living facility Sunday.

Thomas Jones also is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery to a nurse stemming from the altercation at Summit of Uptown Assisted Living, Park Ridge police said Wednesday.

According to police, officers were called to the home at 10 N. Summit Ave. at about 5:33 p.m. Sunday for a report of a stabbing in the dining room.

Authorities allege Jones stabbed a 73-year-old male resident, who is blind and uses a wheelchair, in the abdomen during an altercation.

A female nurse employed at the facility witnessed the attack and immediately intervened, tackling Jones to stop the assault, according to police. The nurse sustained injuries as a result, police said.

The victim, nurse and Jones were all taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities said. Jones then was released to police custody and Cook County prosecutors approved the charges against him.

Court information was not immediately available Wednesday.
