Roselle Lions to collect glasses, socks and food during Community Service Day

The Roselle Lions Club is sponsoring a Community Service Day of People Helping People on Saturday, Oct. 17. It will run from 9 a.m. to noon in the rear parking lot of the American Legion, 344 E. Maple in Roselle.

The Lions will be recycling used eyeglasses, hearing aids, sneakers, printer ink cartridges, cell phones and pop top tabs. The glasses and hearing aids are refurbished, graded and made available for reuse by needy people.

The other items are sorted out and sold to recyclers and the funds are used to provide hearing and vision services to more than 18,000 individuals with vision and hearing issues through the Lions of Illinois Foundation.

As part of the Lions Socktober campaign now in its seventh year, the Lions will collect warm sport socks which will be given to needy people, homeless individuals, and veterans in Hines and North Chicago Veterans Hospitals.

Food for the Roselle Community Food Pantry also will be collected. The need for food is great and with holidays coming soon the need will grow. Paper products such as paper towels, toilet tissue and napkins are needed. Also in short supply, the food pantry needs staples like flour, sugar, canned vegetables and microwave meals. Pasta and sauces are also needed.

Lions will be on hand to remove donated items from vehicles in the parking lot. Cash donations will be accepted and money raised will be donated to help others.
