Aurora man convicted of gun, drug charges

A Kane County jury has convicted an Aurora man of felony weapons and drug crimes.

Tyree K. Pugh-Cox, 24, of the 1800 block of Nottingham Drive, was found guilty Oct. 6 of armed violence with a semiautomatic firearm, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said that on March 28, 2025, a Kane County sheriff’s deputy stopped Pugh-Cox on I-88 near Route 47. The deputy said Pugh-Cox was following another vehicle too closely and hastily crossed a striped median to the exit ramp.

When Pugh-Cox was stopped at Finley Road, the deputy reported seeing him pass a rifle-style firearm to Marquese Reed, who was in the back seat, according to prosecutors.

Deputies reported finding a loaded AK-47 pistol inside a backpack on the rear floor. In the driver’s-side door, they found a bottle of Sprite soda mixed with something that smelled medicinal. It later tested positive for methorphan, an opioid, authorities said.

Pugh-Cox is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 19. He faces a minimum of 15 years in prison.

Reed pleaded guilty in 2025 to being a felon in possession of a weapon.
