DuPage probation officer faces gun charge
A DuPage County probation officer is facing a gun charge after shooting herself in the foot Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Morgan Stich, 27, is charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to DuPage County court records.
The incident happened around 4:33 p.m. outside an apartment building in the 1400 block of Haverhill Drive in Wheaton. A resident who was outside washing her car heard a shot and discovered Stich, with an injury to her left foot, in a grassy area between two buildings, according to a prosecutor’s petition to detain Stich pretrial.
The neighbor called 911. When police arrived, the neighbor told them Stich had asked her not to call emergency services and had gone into the building.
Police said when they entered the building, Stich was coming out of her apartment with a bandaged foot.
A shoe and sock were on the lawn. Police found a bullet and a spent cartridge on the lawn.
They obtained a search warrant for the apartment and found a 9 mm handgun, according to the petition.
The prosecutor’s petition said Stich does not have a Firearm Owner’s Identification card or a concealed-carry permit.
According to the petition, Stich told police the gun did not have a safety and was in the waistband of her sweatpants when it fired.
A judge granted her pretrial release Friday.
