Glen Ellyn man faces gun charges after struggle in hospital
A Glen Ellyn man is being detained in the DuPage County jail on allegations he brought a loaded handgun into a hospital emergency department Sunday.
Michael Vangarsse, 38, of the 0-100 block of Sunset Avenue, is charged with three counts of felony aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon without having a Firearm Owner’s Identification card, DuPage County prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said police were called to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Hospital workers reported that Vangarsse was in the emergency department for treatment, and a nurse told him to change into a hospital gown, authorities said.
Vangarsse refused, shoved a security guard and began walking to another area of the hospital, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
During an ensuing struggle with three security guards, Vangarsse repeatedly reached for a gun in his waistband, prosecutors allege. Besides the loaded weapon, his waistband held three magazines of ammunition, with a total of 60 rounds, prosecutors said.
Vangarsse had been ordered, in an unrelated domestic violence case, not to possess any guns while awaiting trial, according to court records.
His next court date is Oct. 26.
