One killed, four injured in crash involving Spring Grove police SUV

One person was killed and four others were injured when a police SUV responding to a call collided with another vehicle Sunday afternoon, causing a four-vehicle pileup in Spring Grove, authorities said Monday.

The crash occurred about 2:05 p.m. when the Spring Grove Police Department’s 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe was westbound on Route 12 with its emergency lights and siren activated, McHenry County sheriff’s police said.

The patrol vehicle entered the intersection with Winn Road against a red light and hit a 2015 Kia Soul traveling south on Winn, according to the sheriff’s office.

The impact caused the Tahoe to enter the eastbound lane of Route 12, where it struck a 2022 Jeep Compass head-on. The Jeep was then hit by an eastbound 2023 Honda CR-V, sheriff’s police said.

A 65-year-old woman riding in the Kia Soul was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.

A 65-year-old man in the Kia was flown to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford with serious injuries. The 60-year-old man driving the police SUV and the driver and passenger of the Jeep were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated and released, the sheriff’s office reported.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit.
