Chicagoland high school football rankings: Get Mike McGraw’s Top 25 for Week 3

Sandburg soars into the Top 10 following a win over Montini, while Lincoln-Way East rallies to remain No. 1.

1. Lincoln-Way East 2-0 (1): Griffins trailed Kankakee after three quarters, but Jayden Cawthon’s 70-yard punt return for a touchdown flipped the script.

2. Mount Carmel 1-1 (3): Quarterback Brady Cloherty threw for seven TDs as Caravan pulled off one of the all-time great comebacks, rallying from a 30-0 deficit to beat New Jersey’s St. Joseph Regional.

3. Brother Rice 1-1 (5): Freshman QB Sam Holcomb was a perfect 8 for 8 through the air and accounted for four TDs in Crusaders’ win over UC Woodlawn.

4. Oswego 2-0 (6): After Panthers did most of their damage on the ground in Week 1, QB Drew Kleinhans and tight end Ryan Wynn connected for three TDs against No. 17 Geneva.

5. Loyola 2-0 (7): Trailing 13-7 at halftime, Ramblers delivered a dominant second half to beat Cathedral in Indianapolis. Tight end Charlie Fowler caught two TD passes.

6. Sandburg 2-0 (20): After missing Week 1 while recovering from injury, QB Sean Ruisz produced 405 yards of offense to lead an upset of No. 12 Montini. Quinn Durkin added 127 total yards.

7. Providence 2-0 (8): Broden Mackert rushed for 213 yards and five TDs in the Celtics’ victory over Kenwood.

8. IC Catholic 2-0 (9): Defense accumulated four interceptions and returned a fumble for a score in Knights’ win over St. Mary’s South Side of St. Louis.

9. Hersey 2-0 (11): Jaxon St. Paul, whose father, Francis, is the Chicago Bears’ assistant director of college scouting, caught two TD passes from Kentucky recruit Jake Nawrot.

10. Homewood-Flossmoor 2-0 (12): Second straight shutout by Vikings’ defense included a 50-yard pick-six by Robert Williams III against Richards.

11. Downers Grove North 2-0 (15): Offense was clicking in crosstown rivalry game, with the Trojans piling up nearly 400 yards and building a 45-0 lead in the third quarter.

12. Montini 1-1 (4): A pair of fumbles were costly as the school-record 25-game winning streak came to an end at No. 6 Sandburg. Damacio Ortegon piled up 123 receiving yards.

13. Lyons 2-0 (18): With locked-in defense, Lions outscored Wheaton Warrenville South 18-0 in the second half to record their second straight impressive win.

14. Fenwick 2-0 (16): While Iowa recruit Jake Thies provided most of the offense against Oak Park-River Forest, Rocco Nero’s 30-yard TD run clinched the win in the fourth quarter.

15. Prospect 2-0 (17): Matthew Donnelly piled up 215 combined rushing and receiving yards and scored four TDs in a convincing win over St. Laurence.

16. St. Francis 1-1 (13): Tavian Talton returned the opening kickoff 62 yards for TD against Clemente, while QB Jadon Wilson returned from a Week 1 injury.

17. Geneva 1-1 (14): Illinois recruit Bennett Konkey continued to shine, making 10 catches for 217 yards in Vikings’ narrow loss to No. 4 Oswego.

18. St. Rita 1-1 (NR): Brandon Johnson Jr. and linebacker-turned-QB John Fennell each rushed for 130 yards in a one-point win at No. 20 Glenbard West.

19. Batavia 1-1 (2): Bulldogs fell behind early at Rochester and couldn’t recover as Wyoming recruit Michael Vander Luitgaren threw for 237 yards with three interceptions.

20. Glenbard West 1-1 (10): Even with five defensive starters sidelined by injuries, Hilltoppers took St. Rita to the wire before losing on late 2-point conversion.

21. Nazareth 1-1 (21): After losing opener to No. 8 IC Catholic, Roadrunners beat another Elmhurst team in Week 2, topping York behind running back Charles Calhoun.

22. Maine South 1-1 (22): Coach Dave Inserra earned his 250th career win as Indiana recruit Jameson Purcell threw for 326 yards against Warren.

23. New Trier 2-0 (24): Purdue recruit Jackie Ryder threw for 323 yards and three TDs, with John Baxter accounting for 117 yards receiving, in a shutout win over Waubonsie Valley.

24. St. Charles North 2-0 (25): QB tandem of Landon Conroy and Dashel Von Qualen combined to throw for 273 yards against South Elgin.

25. DePaul Prep 2-0 (23): Defenses dominated Rockwell Street rivalry game against Lane Tech. Rams’ Khalil Hannah had an interception, and Halsted Bell had two tackles for loss.
