Lake Park film society opens fifth season with ‘The Sting’ screening

Lake Park High School's Film Appreciation Society’s “Second Chances” selection, “The Sting,” will kick off the season on Wednesday, Sept. 2. The free screening will begin at 6 p.m. in the Lake Park High School West Campus auditorium, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Roselle.

The 1973 classic pairs Paul Newman and Robert Redford as grifters Henry Gondorff and Johnny Hooker, respectively. Robert Shaw as Doyle Lonnegan rounds out the stellar cast as the wronged murderous crime boss seeking retaliation, if not his due compensation.

The centerpiece of the film is the multilayered, complex long con orchestrated by Gondorff. A lot is riding on the success of the skullduggery.

Composer Marvin Hamlisch won the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation for his work adapting the ragtime pieces of Scott Joplin for the film in 1974. All this and a supporting cast for the ages!

Community film buffs are invited to attend the cinematic presentation and stay for an in-depth discussion regarding the background and history of the featured film. Patrons will also be able to preview and vote for film selections for the next Lake Park Film Appreciation Society presentation. Trivia time and prizes are also part of the fifth season kickoff of the Lake Park Film Appreciation Society.

The Lake Park Film Appreciation Society aims to engage the community in the presentation, exploration, interpretation, and critical discussion of classic cinema.
