Man fatally shot at Wheeling hotel identified as Chicagoan

The man who was fatally shot at a Wheeling hotel over the weekend was a 60-year-old Chicagoan, police have revealed.

Eddie L. Baker died at a hospital following the Sunday night shooting at MainStay Suites Northbrook Wheeling, 8000 Capital Drive.

A second shooting victim who survived has been identified as a 29-year-old Chicagoan. His name hasn’t been released.

Baker and the younger man were found in the hotel parking lot by officers responding to complaints of gunshots, Wheeling police said in a news release.

The shooter was last seen leaving the parking lot on foot. A description wasn’t immediately available.

Police believe the victims were targeted.

Wheeling police and members of the Major Case Assistance Team are reviewing video surveillance footage and other evidence.

It was the second incident of gun violence at the hotel in less than a year. In November, one person was wounded in a shooting that led to a police standoff and, eventually, one arrest.

Anyone with information about Sunday’s shooting can call Wheeling police investigators at (847) 459-2690.
