One dead, one wounded after shooting at Wheeling hotel

One man was fatally shot and another was wounded Sunday night at a Wheeling hotel that also was the site of gun violence about nine months ago.

The most recent shooting occurred about 6:50 p.m. at MainStay Suites Northbrook Wheeling, 8000 Capital Drive.

Officers responding to a report of gunshots found two men who had been wounded, Wheeling police said in a news release. Officers treated them until paramedics arrived.

The victims were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where one was pronounced dead.

Following an autopsy Monday, the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. The dead man’s identity hasn’t been released by police.

No arrests had been made as of Monday. Police declined to say if an assailant was being sought.

Wheeling police are investigating with the Major Case Assistance Team.

No other details were available Monday.

In November 2025, one person was wounded in a shooting that led to a police standoff and, eventually, one arrest.

Police Chief Joseph Kopecky on Monday said officers regularly patrol the hotel property and have been working with hotel management to address security concerns and implement additional crime-prevention measures.

“We recognize that this is the second shooting at this location in less than a year, and we are responding to that pattern with the seriousness it warrants,” Kopecky said in an email. “We will continue to maintain a visible police presence, closely monitor activity at the property and work with hotel management and other appropriate partners to strengthen security and reduce the risk of future incidents.”

The department is focused on investigating this latest shooting and protecting residents, visitors, employees and others in the area, he said.
