West Chicago police warn of fake funeral scam

West Chicago police are warning of a scam reported in the city involving people soliciting donations to pay for funeral services of non-existent children or a fake youth charity.

According to police, con artists are approaching people in public claiming they need money for a funeral or some other cause. When victims agree to donate via handheld card readers, the scammers covertly alter the keypad amount or clone the card, stealing thousands of dollars.

The scammers claim they cannot accept cash due to “state laws,” refuse to give printed receipts, or rush you while your card is near the terminal, police said.

Police say you should never hand your card or phone to a street fundraiser or stranger; watch the screen closely to verify the exact transaction amount; insist on cash if you genuinely want to give, and walk away if they refuse it; and check your bank statements immediately if you believe you interacted with a suspicious person.
