Schaumburg trustees to consider final design of new police station Tuesday

Schaumburg trustees Tuesday will consider a proposed final design for the village’s next police station, slated for completion by the end of 2028.

The 149,000-square-foot building would begin construction in May 2027 on the site of the current temporary village hall at 1000 E. Woodfield Road and replace the 50-year-old, 109,500-square-foot station at 1000 W. Schaumburg Road.

The estimated cost of the project is just a hair under $100 million, but it won’t be until next March that trustees can approve a guaranteed maximum price from the construction manager.

Before the end of this year, village hall staff should be out of the temporary building and in the new facility on the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Campus at 101 Schaumburg Court.

The end of that construction project will allow for the January demolition of the old office building Schaumburg bought for the temporary village hall.

There have been some changes to the preliminary design approved last winter and trustees will consider a few more alternatives Tuesday.

Already done are an expansion of the staff parking lot, a reduction in area for stormwater detention after meetings with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago, the growth of mechanical spaces and a relocation of the chief’s office to the corner of the administrative area around it.

Still under consideration are the addition of a third high-security vehicle entrance bay for $280,000, expansion of the parking garage by 4,190 square feet for $628,000 and addition of a major case conference room for $259,000.

Village Manager Brian Townsend said those three possibilities could add value to the building but were categorized as extras in the interest of keeping within the original budget.

Among the elements new to the police department are a state-of-the-art fitness room and firing range, a climate-controlled indoor garage for all vehicles and separate doors for the general public and personnel as well as arrestee departures.

Once the village board signs off on the design, it will be studied by the zoning board of appeals next month for a recommendation.

No decisions have yet been made about the fate of the current police station next to Schaumburg High School.
