Basin Loop Trail slated for renovation by Northbrook Park District starting in early August

The Northbrook Park District will begin the renovation of the multiuse Basin Loop Trail at Techny Prairie Park and Fields on Aug. 3.

The project, anticipated to be completed in October, includes the full removal and replacement of the asphalt path surrounding the basin, as well as several connector path entrances.

“The Basin Loop Trail is popular among walkers, joggers and cyclists, and we are excited to embark on this project that will enhance this great community asset,” Northbrook Park District Director of Parks and Properties James Kim said. “We also know that this project will cause a temporary inconvenience to users, and we are grateful in advance for the community’s patience during construction.”

Areas closed during the duration of the project include the Basin Loop Trail and the bridge to the Meadowhill Park path.

Other areas at Techny Prairie Park and Fields will remain open for the majority of the project, including athletic fields, picnic shelters, the warming shelter with restrooms, the Trail Through Time, the Skate Park, the batting cages and Anetsberger Golf Course. If closures of any of these amenities are needed, signage will be posted.

The most recent major renovations at Techny Prairie Park and Fields took place in 2006, with some portions of the trail dating back to the late 1980s.

Community input has shown residents want the Northbrook Park District to invest in taking care of its assets, with trails being a top priority. In addition, the upcoming project is partially funded by a Bicycle Path Grant of $200,000 through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Established in 1927, the mission of the Northbrook Park District is to enhance the community by providing outstanding services, parks and facilities through environmental, social and financial stewardship.
