Schaumburg Summer Theatre to present Disney’s ‘High School Musical’

Schaumburg Summer Theatre marks its 36th season with Disney’s “High School Musical,” playing Aug 1-9 at the Al Larson Cultural Center, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg.

Based on the hit Disney Channel original movie, Disney’s “High School Musical” is an energetic, family-friendly musical about friendship, teamwork, and the courage to step outside expectations. When basketball star Troy Bolton and academically gifted Gabriella Montez unexpectedly audition for their school musical, they challenge the social order of East High and inspire their classmates to embrace their talents and follow their dreams. Featuring beloved songs including “Start of Something New,” “Breaking Free,” and “We’re All in This Together,” this high-energy production delivers heart, humor, and plenty of spirit for audiences of all ages.

Directed and choreographed by Melissa Crabtree, the production features music direction by Jennifer Carter, assistant direction by Ashley Keys, stage management by Emma Johnson with assistant stage managers Hailey Appelbaum and Liam Durbin. The creative team includes costume design by Kasey Wolfgang, set design by Phil Seifritz, lighting design by John Scrip, and sound design by Rob Reder.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 and 8; 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 and 9; and 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7.

The cast includes Matthias Goecke as Troy Bolton, Emma Perisho as Gabriella Montez, Claire Pruim Haran as Sharpay Evans, Angelo Bravos as Ryan Evans, Dana Cavada as Taylor McKessie, Yahia Nabil as Chad Danforth, Xander De La Cruz as Zeke Baylor, Fiona Bilkey as Martha Cox, Bruno Diaz as Jack Scott, Olivia Sis as Kelsi Nielsen, Holly Baker as Ms. Darbus, Mike Frale as Coach Bolton, Jenny Palacios as Ms. Tenny.

Schaumburg Summer Theatre, a program of the village of Schaumburg, continues its long-standing tradition of presenting full-scale musicals showcasing the talents of high school, college, and emerging professional performers from the Northwest suburbs and beyond. What began in 1989 with “Bye Bye Birdie” has grown into a signature summer program, with acclaimed productions including “The Cocoanuts,” “Can Can,” “On the Town,” “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Ragtime,” and “The SpongeBob Musical,” reflecting both its artistic range and commitment to ambitious musical theater.

The program has also served as a launching pad for young performers, many of whom have gone on to careers in Broadway, television, film, opera, and dance.
