Local St. Vincent de Paul Society closing Addison thrift store to focus on parish-based aid

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Joliet Diocesan Council announced that it will close its thrift store located at 90 W. Lake St. in Addison on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

This difficult decision follows several years of financial losses and extensive consultation with local parish Conferences.

Rooted in its mission as “a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need,” the council affirmed that this decision will allow the organization to focus more directly on neighbor-to-neighbor assistance through parish-based Conferences.

“While the store has served our community faithfully for many years, continuing financial challenges require us to redirect our resources toward our core mission of serving our neighbors in need,” said Helen T. McCullough, president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Joliet Diocesan Council. “As Vincentians, we believe in meeting people where they are, offering practical assistance, compassion, and hope. Through personal encounters, we strive to reflect Christ’s love and dignity for every person.”

Although the thrift store is closing, the society’s charitable mission continues through local Catholic parish Conferences, which provide:

• Rent assistance

• Operation of food pantries, holiday meals, and gift programs

• Distribution of grocery gift cards

• Assistance with utility payments

• Help with car repairs

• Parish-based clothing closets and other local ministries

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul thanks its dedicated employees, volunteers, donors, customers, and community partners for their faithful support over the years. For more than 50 years, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Joliet Diocesan Council has been privileged to serve neighbors in need throughout the Diocese of Joliet.

Although this chapter is coming to a close, the society’s commitment to serving those most vulnerable remains unchanged. Together, we look forward to continuing Christ’s mission of compassion and hope through our parish Conferences and the many ministries they support.
