Cream of Wheaton opens summer fest season

As the old-timey jingle goes, “You can’t beat Cream of Wheat.”

The same can be said of the Cream of Wheaton, the festival that began in the 1980s with a name inspired by the breakfast porridge. You also can’t beat the setting in Memorial Park, home to a lively band shell, offering plenty of shade and close to the downtown action.

The Cream of Wheaton opened Thursday night and runs through the weekend, ushering in the start of summer festival season. Carnival rides are in a different spot this year: city parking lot No. 9 at Liberty Drive and Carlton Avenue.

Hosted by the Wheaton Park District and the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Cream of Wheaton continues Friday in Memorial Park with an arts and craft fair, business expo, a food vendor row and a bunch of crowd-pleasing bands.

BannedJoe will play country and rock from 4 to 5:15 p.m., followed by Vital Signs from 6 to 7:15 p.m. The Ron Burgundy’s headline with yacht rock from 8 to 9:30 p.m.
