Cary-area man charged with reckless homicide in Deer Park fatal crash
A Cary-area man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a Jan. 13 crash that killed a 95-year-old Palatine man in Deer Park, authorities said.
The crash occurred in the westbound lane of Lake-Cook Road, just east of Quentin Road.
Richard A. Krzysztofiak died of blunt-force injuries when his disabled 2006 Honda Accord was struck by a Honda HR-V while he was beneath it. Krzysztofiak was crushed by the car and the impact of the crash, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s crash investigators determined the driver of the Honda HR-V — Ryan P. Rinda — was under the influence of cocaine at the time of the crash.
He and a passenger, a 30-year-old Arlington Heights woman, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the Honda Accord, a 77-year-old Barrington woman, also was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
A school bus, only occupied by the driver, waiting to turn left onto southbound Quentin Road from westbound Lake-Cook Road, was sideswiped during the crash. The school bus driver was uninjured.
Based on data analyzed, crash investigators believe Rinda was traveling more than 50 mph just before striking the stopped Honda Accord, authorities said.
Rinda, 30, of the 28900 block of West Park Street in unincorporated Lake County near Cary, also is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of drugs causing death and aggravated DUI while license revoked. All charges are felonies.
Rinda was arrested Wednesday morning at his home. He was slated to appear in court Wednesday as well.
