Campanelli YMCA reopens in Schaumburg after 18-month relocation process
The Alfred Campanelli branch of the Golden Corridor Family YMCA reopened Monday at its new Schaumburg location, ending an 18-month break after 56 years of serving the community.
The former Signature Fitness Club at 141 Barrington Road was renovated for the Campanelli Y.
The new facility is much improved, featuring more fitness equipment, a pool, a sauna and a steam room. The locker rooms have been updated, moving away from the outdated 1980s look of the old facility.
Doug Britt, president and CEO of the Golden Corridor Family YMCA, said opening day was a long anticipated and most welcome occasion.
“We're super excited,” he said Monday morning. “It's been a long haul. We're ready to go.”
Last month, construction also began on the former At Home store next door at 101 Barrington Road to turn it into a dedicated sports complex for the Y later this year.
Together, the two spaces offer over 133,000 square feet and will employ eight full-time and 40 part-time staff.
The new fitness center has modern strength and cardio equipment, group exercise classes, and an aquatics center for swim lessons, lap swimming and water fitness classes.
The sports complex will ultimately include multipurpose courts, an indoor turf soccer field, batting cages, pitching tunnels, golf simulators and a walking and jogging track.
The building also has on-site first-aid stations and health care partner space for chiropractic and orthopedic services.
Regular hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The sports complex could stay open until 11 p.m. for tournaments and leagues, while the fitness center may be able to open as early as 5 a.m.
The previous Campanelli YMCA at 300 W. Wise Road closed in the fall of 2024 to allow Pulte Homes to build 68 townhouses there. But Britt made finding a new location in the area a top priority.
With village support, the nonprofit requested a property tax incentive allowance from Cook County to help fund the $1 million upgrade. This would lower the property assessment from 25% to 10% for 10 years, rising to 15% in the 11th year and 20% in the 12th.
Schaumburg officials agreed with a consultant's study that found the building needed improvements for the YMCA's needs.
Over the incentive's duration, the YMCA is expected to pay about $4.5 million in property taxes and save more than $5.5 million based on the 2024 tax rate, according to the village.
The Golden Corridor Family YMCA also operates the Taylor YMCA in Elgin.
