‘Remember the Ladies’: Abigail Adams to take the stage at Glen Ellyn History Center

On Saturday, May 30, the Glen Ellyn Historical Society will welcome actress and historian Leslie Goddard for a portrayal of Abigail Adams, wife of the second President of the United States, John Adams, as well as the mother to John Quincy Adams who served as the sixth president (1825-29).

Abigail was known as a true partner and committed patriot. Always feisty and outspoken, she immersed herself in politics of the day even when she ran the family’s farm.

In this living portrayal, Goddard as Abigail recounts her life including her call to John to “remember the ladies,” in the new nation. Abigail shares her opinion, displays her lively wit, and is a member of the greatest love story of all time with husband, John.

The program will be at 2 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main St.

Tickets are $10 or free for students or Glen Ellyn Historical Society members For information, call (630) 469-1867 and check the website at gehs.org.

Earlier in May, the historical society also did a program with historian and actor Terry Lynch on “John Adams: Lawyer in Adversity.”

During his term as the second president in 1797 to 1801, John Adams endeavored to uphold the rule of law within a chaotic environment. While others were engaging in what could be considered treason, Adams sought to navigate toward independence by utilizing British law as a legal framework for negotiation. His involvement in the Treaty of Paris was instrumental in concluding the Revolutionary War.
