High Five: Looking at the top prep sports events this week
This is the kind of week where you want to be in three places at once.
The High Five marches on, looking at the top prep sports events of the coming week. And in this edition we’re not even considering Monday’s packed slate.
Even with the Ed Watson Naperville Invite girls soccer final and a North Suburban Conference softball showdown between Warren and Mundelein scheduled for Monday, we’re eyeing the rest of the week with a full calendar of competition.
Stevenson at Warren girls soccer, Tuesday
Supremacy in the NSC hangs in the balance, although Warren holds a slight advantage at 4-0 compared to Stevenson’s 3-0-1 league mark thanks to an earlier tie with Libertyville.
While Kate Mondejar leads the Blue Devils, Stevenson leans on Grace Harper and Morgan McKelvey. This is a critical match for Warren, which faces Libertyville on May 13.
Warren is the top seed in the Class 3A Harlem sectional while Stevenson is No. 4 at Schaumburg.
Barrington at Palatine baseball, Wednesday
Broncos coach Paul Belo, who spent more than 20 years coaching Palatine, returns to his old stomping grounds for the first time since stepping down as the Pirates’ coach.
Thanks to an array of outcomes last week (Palatine sweeping Prospect and Fremd splitting with Barrington), the Mid-Suburban League West race is tight. This is the second game of the series between the co-leaders.
Conference girls track and field, Wednesday and Thursday
There’s not just MSL baseball on Wednesday. The MSL girls track and field meet also takes place at Hoffman Estates High School, where Prospect will try to break a tie with Wheeling for the most league titles by a single school.
Pick a site, any site, for girls track and field action on Thursday. Conference titles are up for grabs in the North Suburban, Northern Lake County, DuKane, Upstate Eight, Fox Valley and DuPage Valley.
Between last week’s county meets and these conference meets, we’ll have an excellent idea of what next week’s sectionals will look like.
Naperville North at Naperville Central girls soccer, Thursday
It’s a huge week for the Redhawks, who were unbeaten heading into Monday’s Watson Invite final against Barrington.
After Tuesday’s DVC match against Metea Valley, Naperville North awaits. If the Huskies beat Waubonsie Valley on Tuesday, they’ll enter Thursday’s match unbeaten in the DVC.
County boys track and field, Friday
As mentioned above with the girls conference meets, we’re starting to hone in on how the postseason shapes up with boys track and field.
The DuPage County meet takes place at York High School while the Kane County meet is at East Aurora.
