Roof fire damages building in downtown Wauconda

A fire of undetermined cause resulted in about $250,000 in damage Sunday evening to a building in downtown Wauconda.

The single-story business on the 200 block of South Main Street houses a-Adams School of Driving in front and an apartment in back.

According to the Wauconda Fire District, smoke alarms in the apartment sounded about 6:25 p.m. but nothing was showing. The resident went outside and saw smoke coming from the roof.

Firefighters found a fire around the rooftop air conditioning units and used ladders to access the roof. Extensive overhaul, including removing portions of the roof decking to make sure it was out, was needed, according to a Wauconda Fire District news release.

The resident escaped without injury before firefighters arrived.

A check of adjoining buildings showed no significant fire or smoke damage, according to the release.

Several neighboring fire departments assisted.
