Mount Prospect manufactured home fire believed accidental

A fire at a manufactured home near Mount Prospect is believed to have been accidental.

Mount Prospect firefighters responded to the fire at about 10:05 a.m. Wednesday at the Blackhawk Estates community on the 400 block of West Touhy Avenue.

An engine arrived on the scene within six minutes and saw the home engulfed in flames.

Crews quickly brought the fire under control within about seven minutes.

The one occupant at the home at the time of the fire evacuated safely prior to the arrival of fire crews. The resident was transported to a local hospital as a precaution with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Damage is estimated at approximately $35,000.

“Fires in manufactured home communities can be challenging due to limited water supply and how close the homes are to one another,” Fire Chief Tom Wang said. “Engine 11 was able to get water on the fire quickly and keep it from spreading to nearby homes.”

Mount Prospect firefighters handled a fire in December at the Oasis Manufactured Home Park on Eisenhower Street. That one was brought under control within six minutes of the arrival of firefighters, with damages estimated at $70,000.

There were no injuries, and the fire, which was believed to be accidental, was found in the furnace area.

Wang said that incident was a reminder of how important it is to have working smoke alarms in manufactured homes, where fire can spread quickly.
