Occupant escapes house fire in Riverwoods

A person escaped uninjured Thursday from a house fire in Riverwoods.

Firefighters responded to a possible structure fire on Cherrywood Lane at 4:53 p.m. They received multiple calls reporting smoke and flames at the residence, according to the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District.

The response was upgraded, and 11 other fire departments assisted. Fire was visible on the front and side of the medium-sized home when firefighters arrived.

An initial report was that someone may still be inside, prompting an aggressive fire attack and search, according to a news release.

During the search, crews determined that the fire originated in the basement. At the same time, Riverwoods police confirmed the person got out safely and was at a neighbor’s home.

The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, according to the release. The home was deemed uninhabitable and the cause and damage estimate are under investigation. No injuries were reported.
