High Five: Who had the area’s top girls basketball performances this season?
It’s time for the High Five to look back on a tremendous IHSA basketball season.
For months we’ve been honoring the top performances from each week, culminating with the handful of girls and boys teams advancing to the Final Four in Normal and Champaign.
This week we’ll count down the top girls basketball performances of the season. Next week, it’ll be the boys’ turn.
5. Ella Pawelczyk, Libertyville
The 5-foot-5 senior knocked down 10 3-pointers in an early January game against Waukegan, shattering the previous program record of seven set in the 2016-17 season.
Pawelczyk scored 32 points in the 77-29 North Suburban Conference win.
Pawelczyk earned all-conference honors this season and helped the Wildcats reach the Class 4A sectional final.
4. Bella Silva, Maine East
Silva earned Central Suburban League North player of the year honors after an incredible string of games helped her break her own single-season program scoring record.
The 5-7 junior soared past the 2,000-point mark during a February stretch when she followed a 38-point game against Maine West with 46 points in a victory over Niles West.
Silva, who averaged 10 rebounds in those two games, scored more than 900 points this season and became the program’s all-time leading scorer.
3. Emma Briggs, Benet
The 6-foot senior scored a career-high 36 points in a 58-50 win over Oswego East in the Class 4A Benet regional semifinals. Briggs, who scored her team’s first 17 points, added 12 rebounds and 3 blocks while making 11 of 16 shots from the field and 11 of 13 free throws.
The Furman commit, named the East Suburban Catholic Conference player of the year, followed up with 20 points in a win over Bolingbrook to help the Redwings seal their 12th straight regional title.
2. Zoe Black, Prospect
The 5-10 junior guard shined during the prestigious Coach Kipp Hoopfest in January.
The Knights beat Phillips 79-60 as Black earned player of the game honors with her career-high 42 points including 11 3-pointers. Both numbers set program records.
Black, who pulled down 12 rebounds in the game, also set a season program record with 79 3-pointers.
1. Trinity Jones, Naperville Central
Even though Jones topped her own program record with 44 points in a game early in the season, we’re going with the Clemson recruit’s dominant run in December at the 42nd Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown.
Just back from injury, the 6-2 senior scored 40 points on 58% shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 77-74 win over Maine South in the championship game of the holiday tournament.
The first-team IBCA all-stater was the lone Illinois player — boys or girls — to be named a McDonald’s All-American.
