Chicago Steel players score big with adapted hockey game at Marklund

Members of the Chicago steel hockey team volunteered at Marklund recently doing what they love most – playing hockey.

Visiting the Marklund Hyde Center in Geneva, the players were paired up with residents, all of whom are in wheelchairs, and assisted them with using the hockey sticks to smack the puck in attempts to make goals during a special adapted hockey game.

According to Volunteer Program Manager Nikki Osterloh, the visit was enjoyed by players, residents and staff alike, with the game being led by recreational therapist Wes Kohan. “The Chicago Steel has graciously volunteered for many years, and this has become one of our favorite group visits each year.”

A nonprofit organization, Marklund serves children and adults with profound developmental disabilities, and other complex medical needs.

With locations in Geneva, Bloomingdale and Elgin, Marklund provides residential, educational, and day services programs to more than 300 individuals.
