Voters settle primary contests for state House, Senate seats
Republicans and Democrats have chosen their nominees for a state Senate seat and two state House seats that represent parts of Kane, DuPage and McHenry counties.
Senate District 33
When it comes to replacing state Sen. Don DeWitte in the 33rd District, voters in November will choose between Republican Danielle Penman and Democrat Michele Clark.
Penman of St. Charles defeated Jessica Bruegelmans of unincorporated Geneva in Tuesday’s Republican primary. Penman received 6,987 votes, and Bruegelmans got 4,852 votes, according to unofficial election results.
Clark was unopposed.
Penman called for eliminating the receipt of state benefits by immigrants living in Illinois without authorization. She also favored requiring voters to show identification.
DeWitte of St. Charles is stepping down after two terms.
The 33rd District includes parts of Kane, McHenry and DuPage counties. It includes all or parts of Elburn, Crystal Lake, Batavia, St. Charles, Geneva, Algonquin, Carpentersville, Lake in the Hills and Elgin.
House 42
In a race between two Glen Ellyn Democrats, Margaret DeLaRosa bested Lynn LaPlante to secure the party’s nod for the 42nd Illinois House seat.
DeLaRosa had 9,039 votes, and LaPlante received 6,255 votes, according to unofficial results.
DuPage Democratic leaders appointed DeLaRosa to the seat after Terra Costa Howard resigned to become a DuPage County Circuit Court judge. LaPlante serves on the DuPage County Board, and her current term doesn’t expire until 2028.
DeLaRosa, a Glenbard High School District 87 board member, will face Republican Stephanie Trussell of Lisle in the November general election.
Trussell was Darren Bailey’s running mate when he campaigned for governor in 2022. She was unopposed in the GOP primary.
House 84
Saba Haider defeated Jared Ploger in the primary race to decide the Democratic nominee in the state House 84th District.
According to unofficial results, Haider received 6,341 votes, and Ploger got 3,716 votes.
Haider is a DuPage County Board member from Aurora. She said she ran to expand and protect public schools and mental health and addiction services. She also called for protecting the rights of women and immigrants, supporting small businesses and safeguarding the environment.
Haider will face Naperville Republican Brian Scopa, who was unopposed in the GOP primary.
Scopa is a former Naval officer, retiring in 2022. According to his campaign website, he supports expanding access to charter schools, education savings accounts and private-school voucher programs.
Incumbent state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit of Oswego did not run, and appears to have lost her bid Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for state comptroller.
The 84th District is in DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties, representing parts of Aurora, Naperville, Oswego, Montgomery and Boulder Hill.
