St. Isidore students ‘Travel the World’ with Hearthwood residents for Read Across America

Kindergarten and first-grade students from St. Isidore Catholic School in Bloomingdale visited Hearthwood Senior Living in Bartlett for a Read Across America celebration inspired by the Dr. Seuss classic “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

Forty-seven students took part as laughter, passports, and stories from around the world filled the room.

The morning began with a group reading of the book. Students then set off on a “travel journey” through the room.

Each child received a passport and visited themed tables where Hearthwood residents shared stories from places they have visited throughout their lives.

Residents spoke about trips to Norway, the South Pole, London, Italy, Poland and France, giving students a glimpse into destinations many had only read about in books.

The program created meaningful connections between generations as students asked questions and residents shared memories from decades of travel and adventure.

Hearthwood partnered with BookLady’s Book Attic in Bartlett to provide each student with a Dr. Seuss book and bookmark to take home.

The event was designed to connect students and older adults through shared stories, experiences and a love of reading.
