High Five: Who had the area’s top prep basketball performances last week?

The IHSA basketball playoffs have arrived and the stars are shining bright.

The High Five marches on, honoring the area’s top performances. As mentioned last week, the no-repeat rule has ended. So you’ll start seeing some familiar names.

This week’s edition looks at the best efforts from the girls regionals and the final week of the regular season for the boys.

5. Maeve Savage, Hinsdale South

Two seasons after helping the Hornets to a fourth-place Class 3A finish, the 5-foot-10 senior led her team to another regional title with a 34-29 win over Lemont at Hinsdale South.

Savage accounted for more than half her team’s points with a game-high 19. She also grabbed 15 rebounds to lead her team into Tuesday’s De La Salle sectional semifinals to face Aurora Central Catholic.

4. Mike Nee, Glenbard East

The 6-3 South Dakota commit has a hot hand heading into the playoffs with the Rams holding the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Bartlett sectional.

Before that, though, Nee powered Glenbard East to the Upstate Eight Conference title with a 74-55 win over West Aurora.

He scored a game-high 30 points as the Rams rallied from a 9-point first-half deficit. Nee scored 12 of his points during a decisive 26-7 third-quarter run.

The Rams open the postseason Wednesday in the Glenbard East regional semifinals.

3. Kate Donovan, Hersey

The Huskies — and Donovan — just notched their fourth straight regional title.

The 5-7 senior led her team back to sectional play with a 64-37 victory over Buffalo Grove, nearly notching a double-double with points and assists. Her 16 points led the way.

In an 83-23 regional semifinal win over Elk Grove, Donovan eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her prep career with a game-high 19 points.

Hersey, second seeded in the Class 4A Schaumburg sectional, plays No. 3 Fremd in the semifinals on Tuesday.

2. Torey Baskin, Hoffman Estates

The Mid-Suburban League East player of the year put on a show in last week’s 70-62 MSL title game loss to Fremd.

Baskin, a 6-2 guard, scored a game-high 42 points on 24 shots while adding 4 assists and 4 steals in an epic performance.

The fifth-seeded Hawks host a Class 4A regional next week, where they’ll play No. 12 Buffalo Grove in Wednesday’s semifinals.

1. Emma Briggs, Benet

Oswego East had no answer for Briggs in the Class 4A Benet regional title game.

The 6-foot senior, committed to Furman, scored a career-high 36 points to carry the top-seeded Redwings into the East Aurora sectional semifinals to face No. 4 Bolingbrook.

Briggs, who scored the first 17 points of the game for Benet, added 12 rebounds and 3 blocks while making 11 of 16 shots from the field and 11 of 13 free-throw attempts.
