Daybreak program at Monarch Landing in Naperville fosters independence and wellness

For residents of Monarch Landing senior living community in Naperville and for their spouses and loved ones, the Daybreak Program has become one of the community’s most meaningful assets.

It is a place where purpose and companionship come together in a welcoming setting, and where residents and their spouses can enjoy routine, connection and confidence while continuing to live as independently as possible.

Kylie’s path to senior living

Kylie Maton, lead social services coordinator, has been part of the heart of Daybreak since she joined Monarch Landing in 2020. Fresh out of graduate school with a master’s degree in social work, Kylie knew she wanted a career that centered on helping people. It was during her studies and an internship in senior living that she discovered her passion for working with older adults.

When she began her first professional role with the Daybreak Program at Monarch Landing, she immediately felt she had found her place.

“I thought it was so special to have a gathering spot where residents could support their mind and body,” she said. “It becomes an anchor for people. A place where no one feels alone.”

How Daybreak has evolved

Daybreak began in November of 2020 with a focus on social engagement for residents in independent living who were shy or reluctant about getting out and joining programs. As Kylie explained, “The point is to help provide a meaningful day filled with companionship, and meaningful and engaging activities throughout the week.

A wellness-focused experience

Today, Daybreak continues to grow as an innovative wellness and enrichment program. It offers a home-like atmosphere and provides everything from baking and cooking experiences to painting sessions, small group activities, trivia, exercise classes and guest speakers.

Participants also attend events throughout Monarch Landing, such as musical performances and special programs. The environment is flexible and supportive. Residents can come in the morning, in the afternoon, or for the full day. Some attend twice each week, others come daily.

Encouraging independence every day

Kylie works closely with staff across the community to help identify residents who could benefit from the structure, friendship and stimulation that Daybreak provides. Her guiding philosophy is simple.

“The goal is always to encourage ongoing independence,” she said. “I want Daybreak to be a place that adds meaning to their life. A place where they can socialize, enjoy exercise, share a good meal and support their mind, mood and memory. We want to help them remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.”

Strengthening community connections

The impact is clear. Participants re-engage with activities they enjoy and often branch out into other events and groups within the community. Kylie regularly hears that without Daybreak, many would spend most of their time inside their apartment, rarely venturing out. “I help lead them into the broader community,” she said. “It is nice to see them socialize and flourish.”

Support for spouses and families

Spouses are welcome to join but also have the opportunity to hang out with a friend or attend a program. “Spouses tell me they are thankful,” Kylie said. “They know their loved one is safe and engaged. They know they will enjoy a good meal, an exercise class and time with friends. It gives spouses a moment of rest and reassurance.”

Finding joy in the work

Reflecting on her role, Kylie speaks with genuine affection for the residents she serves. “I love hearing their stories,” she said. “I love learning about their careers and their lives. They have lived incredible experiences. I enjoy them so much.”

What began as a first job out of college has become a calling that brings Kylie joy and purpose every day.
