Who had the area’s top prep basketball performances last week?
As we drift into the second half of conference schedules, prep basketball teams are getting to know each other a little too much.
But that doesn’t make it any easier to stop the top players.
With an eye on adhering to the no-repeat rule, the High Five is back to honor the big performances from the prep basketball world.
Let’s take a look at the area’s best from last week’s boys and girls games.
5. Mason Martin, Neuqua Valley
A week after Wildcats sophomore Cole Kelly made the list, Martin earned a spot after his outing against Hersey at the Glenbrook South Hoops Against Hate Showcase.
Martin, a 6-foot-5 junior guard who’s already committed to Illinois, knocked down six 3-pointers while scoring a game-high 34 points and leading the Wildcats to a thrilling 68-65 win over the Huskies.
With last week’s additional wins over Barrington and Metea Valley, the Wildcats enter the week on a 21-game winning streak.
4. Brooklyn Schilb, St. Charles East
Schilb stayed on a tear during a three-game stretch last week.
The 6-foot sophomore’s top game featured 31 points in a 43-36 crosstown win over St. Charles North. In addition to scoring more than 70% of her team’s points, she also grabbed 6 rebounds.
Schilb had 20 points and 4 rebounds in a 56-41 loss to Glenbard West and tallied 26 points with 10 boards in a 66-58 DuKane Conference victory over Wheaton North.
3. Oliver Gray, Barrington
The 6-6 senior kept up his steady play in a trio of games while breaking the program record for career 3-pointers.
The highlight was Gray’s 33-point outing in a 73-68 triple-overtime victory over Prospect. Gray made all 13 of his free-throw attempts.
Gray scored 15 points in a 57-56 win over Prairie Ridge (thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Darsh Poovanna). The Broncos lost 70-59 to Neuqua Valley despite 20 points from Gray.
2. Greta Thompson, Fremd
In an 83-71 nonconference win over Naperville Central, Thompson shined with 27 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots.
The 5-11 guard, committed to Rollins College in Florida, had 13 points with 5 steals and a block in a 66-48 win over rival Palatine. In a 52-49 loss to Hersey, Thompson scored 14 points.
1. Rocco Pagliocca, Stevenson
The senior guard thrived in a rowdy atmosphere during a 77-75 North Suburban Conference victory at Waukegan.
Pagliocca scored a career-high 41 points and grabbed 5 rebounds as the Patriots held off the Bulldogs.
Stevenson added another NSC win earlier in the week by beating Mundelein 65-34. Pagliocca had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
