Newly installed Holocaust remembrance sign in Northbrook discovered missing
A Holocaust remembrance sign in Northbrook went missing Sunday, shortly after a dedication ceremony for it was held about a mile away.
The sign, with a message that reads “Some stories are obscured, see what they endured,” was installed in the village’s downtown at Shermer Road and Walters Avenue by the Chicago Jewish Alliance (CJA).
A dedication ceremony at the site was moved indoors to the Northbrook Public Library due to bad weather.
The sign was discovered missing just minutes after the dedication, which featured speakers that included a Holocaust survivor.
“We are deeply saddened and angry,” said Susan Haggard, events coordinator with Chicago Jewish Alliance. “Incidents like this underscore exactly why the Chicago Jewish Alliance was created and reflect the challenges our community continues to face.”
Haggard said a police report had been filed, but added that “it is unlikely the sign will be recovered.”
The sign featured a QR code that redirects to a link for the CJA’s “Never Forget” archive, a partnership with the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center that highlights a different survivor’s journey each day.
Haggard said the group is discussing whether and how to replace the sign.
