Closed Schaumburg YMCA relocating to former retail sites

After closing more than a year ago, Schaumburg’s 56-year-old YMCA branch is reopening soon after taking over two former retail sites in town.

Formerly Campanelli YMCA, the rebranded Golden Corridor Family YMCA is expected to begin operations at the adjacent spaces that once housed At Home and Signature Fitness Club locations in the Prairie Town Center shopping center on the 100 block of Barrington Road in the next few months.

Even when the Y closed at 300 W. Wise Road in autumn 2024 to make way for a townhouse development by Pulte Homes, Golden Corridor President and CEO Doug Britt spoke of the search for a new location in or near Schaumburg as a top priority.

Village trustees this month approved a special-use permit for a health recreation facility at the combined 131,654-square-foot space of the former At Home store at 101 Barrington Road and the former Signature Fitness Club next door at 141 Barrington Road.

Schaumburg Economic Development Director Matt Frank said the move not only fills two large vacancies but generates foot traffic for the other businesses nearby.

“This is a great reuse for us,” he added. “I think it’s a good fit.”

The YMCA will include a sports complex with multipurpose courts, indoor turf field soccer, batting cages and pitching tunnels, golf simulators and training areas, a walking and jogging track, a fitness center with modern strength and cardio equipment, group exercise and wellness classes, and an aquatics center for swim lessons, lap swimming and water fitness classes.

The building also will have on-site first-aid stations and health care partner space for chiropractic and orthopedic services.

Regular business hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. However, the sports complex side could run until 11 p.m. depending on tournaments and league play while the fitness center side has the potential to open as early as 5 a.m.

The former Signature Fitness Club abruptly closed in July 2024 along with two other company locations in Naperville and Yorkville.

The At Home interior decor store that opened in a former Lowe’s space in the autumn of 2019 closed last spring.

The Golden Corridor Family YMCA also operates the Taylor YMCA in Elgin.
